Ceasar Mitchell Receives Progressive Firefighters Endorsement for Mayor

ATLANTA (September 18, 2017)—The Progressive Firefighters of Atlanta (PFA), Local 134, gathered on the steps of Old City Hall to formally endorse Ceasar Mitchell for Mayor of Atlanta.

The PFA endorsed Mr. Mitchell because he:

  • Helped raise the starting salaries for Atlanta firefighters to $40,000;

  • Worked to restructure the City of Atlanta’s pension plan; and

  • Fought for and helped raised the minimum wage for City of Atlanta employees to $15.00.

“Ceasar Mitchell understands the needs of working families. Don’t let the suit and tie fool you. He is one of us.” said Terrance Simon, President of PFA. “Ceasar put together the employee compensation group years ago. He led the charge to address pay issues head on – back when the current Administration would not even sit down to talk to us.”

“I want to thank the Progressive Firefighters of Atlanta,” said Mitchell. “I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge all of the firefighters across the nation and express Atlanta’s gratitude for the sacrifices that you and your families have made on behalf of others.  I am ready to serve you on day one!”

During the press event, Mitchell also described his plans to make Atlanta a safe, thriving city.  As Mayor Mitchell will:

  • Transform the City’s fire stations in high petty crime communities into “Red Blue and True” community safety centers. A police officer will be assigned to these safe centers to bolster community relations and provide safety support.

  • Make our neighborhoods safer through crime prevention, job creation, community partnerships, and resident involvement.

  • Create the Youth Enrichment Program (YEP!), also called the 7th Period, providing mentorship opportunities to help deter behavior that may result in youth entering the criminal justice system.

  • Ensure our first responders earn a competitive wage and are equipped properly to do their jobs.

To date, Mitchell has received endorsements from several of Atlanta’s largest labor unions including the Professional Association of City Employees (PACE), The Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), and The International Alliance of Theatrical State Employees (IATSE), among others.
